First Communion Programme

At North Hinksey
Our Parish First Communion Programme runs from January to the end of May. We use the course ‘God’s Greatest Gift’, and the programme begins with a formal Rite of Inscription at Mass, when children and their parents declare their commitment to the programme.

There are classes after Mass each Sunday for the children, when one of the ‘Gift’ topics is covered by the catechist. The children then complete the material in their workbooks at home with their parents. Parents have four evening meetings with Father Paul. At these they discuss the CAFe material used by the group, and issues raised by their work on the programme with their children.

Children are prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation as part of the programme. They make their First Confession at a Children’s Service of Reconciliation, usually on the morning of Holy Thursday. Other parish children are also invited to this service to receive the Sacrament.

First Holy Communion Mass is usually on the third Sunday in May. When numbers allow, it takes place during a Parish Mass, to allow the local worshipping community to share in the occasion.
If you would like your child to join in the next programme of preparation, please contact the Parish Office.
